RILEY DANIEL KENNEDY: WELCOME TO THE WORLD

Father John with baby Riley

Erin, happy it's over...and that she took the pain meds

Grandma Ann cradling Riley the Wise

Riley Daniel Kennedy

Born 8:45 this morning. Cute as a button. Has all limbs and toes and whatnot. 7 pounds, 13 ounces. 20 3/4 inches long. Cute as a button. Did I say that? Looks very very wise. Fingers are still a little wrinkly, but clearly writerly. Has the toes of an elite marathon runner, the height of a nascent pro basketball player. His head is very large and therefore I surmise he will be a human computer as well. Already thinking up stories to tell him before he becomes too smart for the old bearded guy with the cane and the pipe to fool him. He's cute as a button. (Cute as a cute button?)

Erin is doing fine and both John and Erin seem very happy. Ann and I are very happy, too.

Granpappy Jeff

Congratulations to the whole family (and yay for the pain meds)! That is one cute baby, and (at least if my parents are to be believed) being a grandparent is one of the most fun things in the world. Time to start stocking up on those athletic shoes and computers, as well as toy racing cars, video games (you need to get one now to properly test it's safe to use in a few years' time), children's stories and the lot!

Thanks, all! And Erin and John say thanks.

The baby is extraordinarily well-behaved and rather mesmerizing. Like, you can sit there all day and just stare at his tiny face.

Much love,

Congratulations to everyone involved. Mesmerizing is right, Jeff. Watching a baby is like sitting in front of a fireplace. You can stare for hours, and it's strangely rejuvenating.

I was hoping Erin would pull the trigger a few days earlier, because I happen to know from personal experience that the fifth of December is a great birthday, but otherwise she seems to have done a great job.

Be prepared. Young Jasper Marlowe Anthony Crossley was born just eighteen months ago, three ounces heavier and a half inch longer, and he's now a thirty-five inch, twenty-six pound human dynamo who jumps off the couch and speaks words in two languages. Blink and you'll miss it.

Since I'm such a sucker for babies, I'll also throw in this birth announcement, originally written by Herman Melville when he first became a father and stolen by me when I did the same:

[The mother] is doing well, also the phenomenon, which weighs I know not how many pennyweights,—I would say, hundred-weights.—We desired much to have him weighed, but it was thought that no hay-scales in town were strong enough. It takes three nurses to dress him; and he is as valiant as Julius Caesar.—He’s a perfect prodigy.—If the worst comes to the worst, I shall let him out by the month to Barnum; and take the tour of Europe with him. I think of calling him Barbarossa—Adolphus—Ferdinand—Otho—Grandissimo Hercules—Sampson—Bonaparte—Lambert.—If you can suggest anything better or more characteristic, pray, inform me of it by the next post.—There was a terrible commotion here at the time of the event.—I had men stationed at all the church bells, 24 hours before hand; & when the Electric Telegraph informed them of the fact—such a ding-donging you never heard.—All the engines came out, thinking the State-House was on fire.

Of course the news was sent on by telegraph to Washington & New Orleans.—When Old Zack heard of it—he is reputed to have said—“Mark me: that boy will be President of the United States before he dies.”—In New Orleans, the excitement was prodigious. Stocks rose & brandy fell.—I have not yet heard from Europe & Pekin. But doubtless, ere this, they must have placed props against the Great Wall.—The harbor here is empty:—all the ships, brigs, schooners & smacks having scattered in all directions with the news for foreign parts.—The crowd has not yet left the streets, gossiping of the event.—The number of calls at 49 Mt. Vernon Street is incalculable. Ten porters suffice not to receive the cards; and Canning the waiter, dropped down dead last night thro’ pure exhaustion.—Who would have thought that the birth of one little man, when ten thousands of other little men, & little horses, & little guinea-pigs & little roosters, & the Lord only knows what, are being born—that the birth of one little phenomenon, should create such a panic thro’ the world:—nay, even in heaven; for last night I dreampt that his good angel had secured a seat for him above; & that the Devel roared terribly bethinking him of the lusty foe to sin born into this sinful world.
