DANIELEWSKI'S AT IT AGAIN

I love this guy. What can I say? I haven't even read the book and I still love it. I don't care if it turns out to be the biggest con game in the history of literature. I don't care if it turns out to be utter crap. The level of play and imagination at work here is monumental. And every time somebody pushes the envelope at this level, it allows a dozen renovators room to work and another dozen experimenters to look not quite so out there in readers' eyes. It pushes the fringe way the heck out there to the horizon.

And it's actually very good. Pain in the ass to read, though.

It's the kind of gleeful experimentation that causes some folks to roll out the howitzers and blast it before it can breathe. Some of the reviews have been outright hostile, but then this exactly a book designed to be read over a weekend.

He's dropping by my local haunts (Prairie Lights, Iowa City) in a few weeks. Can't wait to hear him read live.

Jeff, if you dig OR as much as HoL, you might want to check around for a copy of his Fifty Year Sword (only 1,000 copies printed to date). Beautiful vertical book (very narrow, but maybe twice as high as your standard hardcover) that I'm assuming is meant to resemble a sword of sorts.

"One late October evening at an East Texas ranch, Chintana, a seamstress recovering from a painful divorce, comes across a Story Teller caped in shadow recounting for five orphans a tale of unspoken revenge, a harrowing quest, and a terrible sword which everyone soon enough realizes waits before them concealed in a long black box."
